Above are four of many pictures taken by my father (Delbert M. Sovine)
when he worked with the Appalachian Electric Power Company building a high voltage transmission line (The Richmond-Roanoke Line, I assume from the notes)
from Virginia into and through West Virginia.
His father (William M. Sovine) got a job with the power company as foreman by bringing in a big crew
of willing workers from West Virginia consisting of several of his sons among others.
I am currently trying to preserve this
history by scanning and identifying these pictures.
There are about 200 of these pictures that directly relate to the power line jobs. Most of those are from around the two camps in Virginia: "Camp No. 1" at Goode and "Camp No. 2" at Boones Mill. Others were taken at a home my Grandfather may have rented near one of these camps or at Bassett, VA. Additionally, there are a few taken at a one-room school my Grandfather's younger children attended while they lived in VA.
I am really looking for someone who can identify the people and places in the pictures including the one of the "Girls from
around camp # 1" and many others.
These girls are undoubtedly relatives of one or more of the power line workers, most likely the overall superintendent of the job and may have lived nearby.
They are definitely not "camp followers" as one might think from my Dad's brief description.
The 1925 stamp appears to be the only one he had as he stamped all the pictures with the year 1925!
I would also be interested to know if there is any remains of "Camp No 1". Camp No 2 was supposed to be located at "Boone Mill, VA";
however, I can only locate a road by that name.
Does anyone know anything of Boone Mill?
Sincerely,
Donald M. Sovine
